We are the 99% of Norwich, Norfolk, United Kingdom!
Occupy Norwich is a branch of a leaderless global resistance movement. We will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1% nor the urgent global economic and environmental problems they bring.
The global movement grew from the Occupy Wall Street movement of New York, inspired by Spanish Indignados and the 2011 Arab Spring.
As our first action, Occupy Norwich established a protest camp in the heart of Norwich's busy shopping district on the Day of Global Action, 15th October 2011, and maintained it for 129 days thereafter.
Situated at the Haymarket, alongside Norwich's ancient outdoor market place, the camp community endured a wintry freeze to become one of the longest-serving continuous Occupy camps worldwide. The camp enabled thousands of mutually-enriching conversations with passing local residents, workers, tourists and shoppers.
When a court ruled the camp unlawful, we ensured it peacefully disappeared overnight, with dignity and without the expense of police enforcement. Lunching shoppers found no trace except for a "Need before Greed" sign, beyond reach in the lap of a statue.
In step with the global movement, we are now (March 2012) in Phase Two: outreach, awareness and action. Established working groups are meeting, sharing and developing ways to confront urgent global issues of inequality, unsustainability, political dysfunction and social injustice.
WHAT WE NEED:
Yourselves, friends, family! We need people! We need your help! Together we continue to talk and plan, make friends, reconnect with our local community, share our grievances, discuss solutions and progression. We seek real democracy to reclaim both our society and our environment from those who gladly endanger everything for profit.
Please also connect with us if you're planning something in your town/city. We will gladly befriend and Twitter follow all of our friends :-)
Occupy YOURSELF. TOGETHER with us. EVERYWHERE!
Please remember that this is a totally non-violent protest, and we expect everyone to behave within the law. Thank you.
